The Environment
Starchild Centre, located on a 9 acre hobby farm in the Cowichan Valley, provides opportunities for infants, toddlers and preschool children from Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake, Maple Bay and Duncan to explore and connect with the beauty of nature.
Our Animals
Feeding the fish and petting the horse, miniature donkeys, goats and chickens instills in children a lifetime love of animals. Our animals seem to have a very calming effect on the children.
Inside Activities
Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia philosophies and pedagogic materials are employed to develop cognitive and creative abilities of daycare children. Baking nutritious cookies and snacks is a popular inside activity.
Outside Activities
Nature-based education is a big part of our childcare program. Children love story telling time, puppetry and dance activities in the tipis, their fieldtrips around the property and even driving the tractor.
Children's Gardening
Each infant, toddler and preschool child has his or her own garden plot and prepares, plants, waters, cultivates, harvests, shares and eats the produce with their family.
Tree Planting
Children develop a love of nature and learn to protect and preserve the environment through planting seedlings and caring for their little trees.
